Portnox 2024 Year in Review: A Landmark Year of Innovation and Growth

Blog - 2024 retro

As we get down to the business of 2025, we’d like to pause and reflect on what an exceptional year 2024 was for Portnox. With a relentless focus on innovation, security, and user experience, we rolled out groundbreaking features, streamlined usability, and bolstered supportability—all while addressing critical customer feedback. Let’s dive into the highlights of our 2024 releases that have propelled Portnox to new heights.

New Integrations & API Calls

Security does not operate in a silo, and neither should security tools – integrations are key to making sure your team is not missing critical information as they bounce from one tool to another.  We expanded our out-of-the-box integrations to feature some new players and made considerable improvements in existing ones.

  • Absolute Secure Endpoint – Users can now use compliance with Absolute Secure Endpoint in risk policies.
  • Jamf – We greatly expanded our Jamf integration; beyond just compliant or not, we can pull information from Jamf-managed devices like Geolocation, antivirus state, drive encryption, forbidden applications, and more.
  • Data Dog SIEM – we now integrate with Data Dog so you can manage all your critical security alerts in one place.

And speaking of SIEM integrations, we added a “Test” button, so now verifying your setup is quick and easy.

Other API improvements include a new call for editing NAS properties, and the ability to retrieve all MAB accounts for enhanced automation.

Dashboard Customization

Your dashboard, your way! With new customization options, users can now add, remove, and rearrange widgets to suit their unique needs. This framework sets the stage for even more widget releases in the future, ensuring that you always have the most relevant insights at your fingertips.

  • New Map Widget
    • We introduced a brand-new map widget, offering full zoom capabilities and interactive tooltips for better geographic visualization of your network.
  • Refreshed UI for Access Policies
    • The Access Policies interface received a sleek new design alongside minor usability improvements.
  • Redesigned Risk Policies Pages
    • Our Risk Policies pages received a complete overhaul, migrating to our latest UI framework for improved performance, consistency, and security.
  • Wired Interface Configuration UI
    • Previously an engineering-heavy task, configuring wired interfaces is now user-friendly with a dedicated UI.

Conditional Access

2024 was a banner year for Conditional Access!  There were two big additions to CAA this year:

  • Microsoft External Authentication Methods (EAM) Support
  • CAA Perpetual Policy Enforcement
    • For the first time, devices connected via Conditional Access for Applications are continuously monitored for compliance, with automatic sign-outs if they fall out of compliance—mirroring the capabilities of NAC environments.
  • OpenID Connect (OIDC) Support
    • Added as an alternative to SAML, broadening single sign-on capabilities.
  • Portnox Conditional Access Certificate Management
    • We introduced robust certificate management features, allowing seamless, zero-downtime transitions to new certificates upon expiration.

RADIUS & NAC

We did not forget our old favorites, RADIUS and NAC!  2024 saw some improvements for both of our flagship cloud products:

  • Multiple Captive Portals
    • Customers have been clamoring for support for multiple captive portals, and now the dream is real – we added support for up to 10 unique portals.  Whether you’re managing employee BYOD devices with sponsored guest mode or enforcing strict AUP/Disclaimer settings for guest access, you now have full control over how access is granted.
  • Change of Authorization (CoA) in Local RADIUS Docker Container
    • We’ve integrated CoA into our local RADIUS Docker container, extending this feature to everyone—not just Active Directory users. Plus, you no longer have to choose between CoA and RADIUS redundancy; both are seamlessly incorporated into the same container.
  • Cloud CRL Support
    • In addition to OCSP, we now support Certificate Revocation Lists (CRL) in Portnox Cloud, adding an extra layer of security for certificate verification.
  • Custom RADIUS Attributes with the same name and extended character limits.
  • Identity-Based Pre-Shared Key (IPSK) Support
    • We now support vendor-specific implementations like Cisco’s iPSK and Aruba’s mPSK, allowing unique passwords for non-802.1x devices across multi-vendor networks.

This list is by no means exhaustive – there were a ton of other improvements to supportability, usability, and some bug fixes as well.
